Tech Center Project
During the course of our work with women across the country we often found that there was an undeniable link between social privilege and the opportunity to learn about or work with technology, and this connection became more evident with women and girls from less well-off families.
We started the Tech Center at Lajpat Nagar as long-term commitment to the idea that creating public and community spaces where young girls can learn about technology will remedy the absence of any other formal training. Our earlier work with young women in Lajpat Nagar was a hugely rewarding experience – not only did we get to see these young girls grow in confidence everyday but a few of them went on to work in offices (an opportunity not open to them earlier) and help sustain their families in return.
Intended as a community space for girls from the area, the Center functions as a dedicated space to learning, experimenting and just having fun with technology! In its most simple form, it help these young women get rid of their fear of machines and technology, and guides them through their learning. A supportive, all-female staff ensures that the girls are working in an environment that is not intimidating, and impart professional skills as well as upgrade their existing knowledge of commonly used machines and technology.
We believe that it’s not asking for too much to offer these girls an equal chance to participate in their own personal and professional growth. Just like us, they’re also entitled to the right to challenging jobs, dignity of labor, and a chance to better their lives through their own skills. The Tech Center is only a first step in that much larger journey.
Get involved in the Tech Center! Any efforts are more than welcome - whether financially or otherwise! If you want to come help us out being a trainer, just drop us a line, we would love to work with you!
