Technical Training for Women
FAT believes that effective technical training for women from all strands of life is essential to ensure that the gender gap in technology is bridged. The following are our own effort towards this:
Workshops for Women by Women (WWW)
WWW are short-term workshops for different groups of women that address different needs – we have conducted workshops on making simple videos for women from the development sector, website design workshops for NGO’s, entry-level awareness workshops to familiarize women with the internet and even basic technical skill workshops for underpriviledged adolescent girls. The workshops have taken FAT as far as Guwahati, Bhopal and Ahmedabad among many other places!
The idea behind the workshops is to provide women with critical technical skills they need in their professional and personal lives. To support their learning and remove any fear of judgment, the workshops are conducted by women who have experience in the field, and who mentor rather than only instruct the women during the course of the workshop. Participants also get the chance to interact and learn from one another in a friendly and informal set-up. The all-women structure of the workshops also ensures that the participants are encouraged by the presence of not only the facilitators but also fellow participants, and offers a rare environment of positive aid and solidarity.
Our Clinton Global Initative Commitment
The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) was created by President Clinton in 2005 in an effort to translate ideas into action. In 2011, FAT has been invited to be a member of the CGI. Along with the membership, FAT has also been invited to attend the 2011 Annual Meeting of CGI to be held in New York city on September 19th-22nd. The Annual Meeting brings together heads of state, government and business leaders, scholars, and NGO directors. Participants analyze pressing global challenges, discuss the most effective solutions, and build lasting partnerships that enable them to create positive social change.
Each member of CGI creates a Commitment to Action — a plan to take specific steps to address a global challenge. As a member of the CGI, FAT has made a commitment to train 1500 rural and urban poor women from around India over the next three years in non-conventional technical skills aimed at widening their employment options. These could include skills such as electrical work, plumbing, automobile repairing, etc. The decision about specific skills training will also depend on the partners concerned and the communities they work with. FAT will provide quality technical training to women enrolled in the program(s) along with skills needed to secure employment and deal with the challenges of working in a male dominated workspace.
Watch this space for more updates on our commitment as it develops.
